The citizenship bill (CAB) was passed on Monday by the Lok Sabha with a major side of 311 votes against 80 votes. Here is all you need to know about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill or CAB:

What is The Citizenship (Amendment) CAB Bill?

The Citizenship (Amendment) CAB Bill attempts to grant Indian citizenship to six communities which are Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists who are leaving out from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. The bill revises the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants in the selected categories above qualified for Indian citizenship.

WHO WILL GET THE INDIAN CITIZENSHIP?

The Citizenship CAB (Amendment) Bill intends to give citizenship to non-Muslims (Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis) who are from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh who came in India before 31st dec, 2014.

In simple words, the CAB covers a way for Indian citizenship to many of the newcomers, who classify themselves with any of the stated religions, even if they don’t have enough documentation to prove their residential address. It also suggests that if an immigrant who does not relate to the said stated category of communities will not get Indian citizenship.

Also, as per the Citizenship CAB (Amendment) Bill, any unauthorized immigrant from Afghanistan, Pakistan or Bangladesh who belongs to these communities will not be banished or detained if they are not bearing any authentic documents for their residential proof in India.

Before CAB the term of the immigrants’ residency was 11 years. The revised bill has decreased it to 5 years. It means that immigrants from the 3 countries ( Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh) and from the specified religions, who have entered India before 31st Dec 2014, will not be handled as illegal immigrants.

THE CITIZENSHIP BILL CAB WILL NOT TO STEAL ANYONE’S INDIAN CITIZENSHIP:

To all the repeated questions from the Opposition party of Muslims are being left out, Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah said Muslims from other countries have all the rights to apply for Indian citizenship as per existing rules of citizenship. A total of 566 Muslims have been given Indian citizenship, said Amit Shah.

Amit Shah told the bill attempts to correct the wrong done by the separation of the country on ethical lines. He went on to strike the Congress for alleged doublespeak on the matter, stating the party had its part in during given Indian citizenship to 13,000 Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan without raising a word about and the same for other societies.

He also stated the CAB bill does not break Article 14 of the Constitution as it does not prevent laws based on reasonable classification.
